Being around trees and nature has been shown to lower stress levels. The calming effect of a forest environment can lead to reduced cortisol levels and promote relaxation.

We’ve all heard the advice: "Just take a deep breath."

But when you’re in the middle of a parenting meltdown, an ADHD spiral, or a moment of body dysmorphia, a deep breathing can sometimes feel impossible—or worse, it can make you feel even more stuck in your head.

As a psychotherapist, I teach my clients that emotion regulation is a body-first job. Before we can "think" our way out of stress, we have to "feel" our way back to safety.

Here are three somatic therapy (body-based) skills to help you step off the mental treadmill ground your nervous system:

1. The "Sour Shock" Reset

When your brain is racing or you feel a panic response rising, your nervous system is stuck in "high alert." A quick way to interrupt this is with a strong sensory input.

  • The Skill: Keep sour candies or a lemon in your bag. The intense flavor forces your brain to shift from "internal chaos" to "external sensation" instantly. It’s a literal reset button for your senses.

2. The Weight of the World (In a Good Way)

If you feel "floaty," anxious, or disconnected from your skin, you need proprioceptive input. This tells your brain exactly where your body ends and the world begins.

  • The Skill: Use a weighted blanket, a heavy pillow, or even just push your palms firmly against a wall. That deep pressure sends a signal to your brain that you are grounded, held, and safe.

3. External Tracking

When we are overwhelmed with emotions, our eyes tend to fixate on one spot or glaze over. By moving your eyes, you signal to your nervous system that you are scanning your environment and that there is no immediate "threat."

  • The Skill: Slowly name 3 things in the room that are the color blue. Then, find 2 things you can physically touch. This "externalizes" your focus and pulls you out of the internal storm.

The Bottom Line:

Healing isn't about never being stressed; it's about how quickly you can find your way back to your centre. Whether you are navigating a new life stage or just a long Tuesday, remember: Regulation before revelation.
